Caster's brake options:

brake1.jpg1. Side brake (yoke based): For light duty caster with thin metal yoke. Step on the brake will pull two yokes together then making contact with the wheel and block the rolling. For better result, a very slim round metal maybe added along with the wheel.brake2.jpg2. Side brake (brake pad): the brake pad shall move down and prevent the wheel's rolling. Widely used from light to heavy duty.
brake3.jpg3. Dual brake (American style): Swivel rotation and wheel rolling are both locked. The pedal can be plastic (PC) or Metal, plastic pedal is more durable..brake4.jpg4. Dual brake (Japanese style): The brake is long so it is very light to use, just be caution when installing. This brake can also be applied to Rigid caster:
